Joseph S. Elkinton Collection, 1731-1902.

The collection contains assorted records relating to Quaker meetings in Philadelphia, including Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Philadelphia Monthly Meeting for the Western District, Philadelphia Monthly Meeting for the Southern District, Easton Preparative Meeting, Uwchlan Monthly Meeting, and blueprints of burial grounds, 18th to 20th centuries. There are also some miscellaneous documents from the Institute for Colored Youth (now Cheyney University) and papers by and relating to Nathaniel P. Rogers, including his diary, May-July 1840 and holograph texts for speeches on slavery.

Joseph Scotton Elkinton (1830-1905), a Quaker, attended Westtown School in Westtown, PA, and with his brother, Thomas, went into the soap business, which later became the Philadelphia Quartz Company. He was instrumental in garnering interest and securing aid for the Doukhobors, a religious group which emigrated from Russia to Canada. He was a minister in the Society of Friends. Mount Holly Monthly Meeting was established in 1776 by Burlington Quarterly Meeting out of Burlington Monthly Meeting. In 1827, after the Hicksite Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, the Meeting split into Hicksite and Orthodox branches. The Orthodox Meeting was discontinued in 1828 ; its members were transferred to Burlington Monthly Meeting (Orthodox).
